David and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Adelaide Retirement, Lifestyle and Travel Expo over the weekend! We met a lot of Adelaideans, each with their own aged care story to tell. What was really pleasing was the number of people who shared their positive experiences with residential aged care – usually for an elderly parent, but sometimes for a partner with serious health issues.
As always, we get asked a lot of questions about the aged care system. In particular, many were concerned about the costs of aged care when one partner needs to enter care but the other is managing well and is able to live independently. There are a number of considerations in these circumstances, but the good news is that these situations can usually be worked out such that the independent person can remain at home, while the person who needs help can get the care they need in a quality nursing home.
