Six Steps to Finding the Right Residential Aged Care

Clear guidance when you need it most.

When someone you love needs residential aged care, families are often forced to make decisions quickly and under pressure. The system is complex, the information can be confusing, and the stakes feel high.

At Senexus, we’ve helped families navigate residential aged care for more than a decade. This six-step guide explains how the process actually works, what to expect, and where families commonly get stuck — so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

Step 1 – Legal Authority

Before any aged care application can proceed, someone must be legally authorised to act on behalf of your loved one. In most cases, this means having an Enduring Power of Attorney in place. Without it, families can face delays or the need to apply to SACAT.

Step 2 – ACAT Assessment

An ACAT assessment is essential for access to residential aged care. Wait times can range from weeks to months, so arranging this early is critical. Family involvement during the assessment helps ensure accurate outcomes.

Step 3 – Understand the Costs

Aged care costs are one of the least understood parts of the system. Senexus provides clear estimates, explains RADs and payment options, and helps families understand whether selling the family home is actually required.

Step 4 – Financial Assessment

Centrelink’s income and assets assessment is lengthy and complex. Errors can cause delays or incorrect fees. Senexus completes these assessments accurately and efficiently.

Step 5 – Choosing the Right Home

There are hundreds of aged care homes, but availability alone doesn’t determine suitability. Senexus shortlists homes based on care needs, financial suitability, and real client feedback. We are completely independent and receive no commissions.

Step 6 – Managing the Transition

Once placement is secured, families often face further decisions around property and finances. Senexus can coordinate or guide these next steps, easing the transition into care.
