Independent and Supported Living

Retirement villages are housing developments designed for people over 55, offering a range of accommodation options, services and facilities.

The size and levels of accommodation vary, from self-contained independent living units, villas or apartments, and are designed for when you require little or no assistance with daily activities, but want to enjoy the benefits of living in a retirement community. Living options range from one to four bedrooms within a low, high or medium rise complex, terrace housing, stand alone or semi detached dwellings.

Supported living encompasses a range of accommodation options variously known as serviced apartments, serviced units, care apartments, and assisted living units.  These serviced apartments are generally one or two bedrooms and presume that the resident is largely independent with their mobility.  However, as opposed to independent living units, they provide residents with some daily living assistance. This assistance may include cleaning, laundry and assistance with personal care. While a small kitchenette is usually included within the apartment, two, or three, meals per day are provided in a dining room setting.

Demand for both independent and supported living is high as they are popular with people who feel they need more security, support or company than remaining int heir own home, but who also want to maintain a level of independence. Senexus will provide you with tailored and accurate advice about the supported living options that best suit your lifestyle, preferences and budget.

Each independent supported living option comes with its own form of occupation and ownership rights, as well as a range of fees and charges. Comparing supported living options is not always easy – some of the factors to consider include:

  • the type of accommodation and form of occupancy
  • entry contribution and ongoing fees and charges
  • the amount of the deferred management fee when you vacate the unit
  • other exit costs
  • how soon you receive your exit entitlement
  • exit entitlement early release provisions should you need to enter residential aged care
  • availability of home care services

Senexus will provide you with tailored advice on the accommodation options that will best meet your preferences and budget and enable you to continue living independently for as long as possible. We will:

  • Advise you of the suitable supported living options available.
  • Determine the upfront and ongoing costs you will be required to pay
  • Research and shortlist suitable accommodation options for you to consider
  • Compare the services and amenities available at each of the shortlisted accommodation options

Whether you would simply like to know more about independent  and supported living options or are actively looking to move into supported living, Senexus can provide you with the advice you need.
